NEW LONDON, N.H.—Despite a perfect day from senior Eglis Bizhoti (Kucovë, Albania), UMass Boston fell 7-2 to Colby-Sawyer College Sunday afternoon in the Beacons opener at the Kelsey Courts.
With the win Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-1 on the year, while the Beacons fall to 0-1 to begin their championship defense.
The home team took a 2-1 advantage after doubles play.
The Beacons lone doubles point came at number two, where Bizhoti and Cullen edged Justin Pinard and Cass McCann, 8-6.
Colby-Sawyer took control of the match in singles play, winning five of six matches.
Clay Allen opened up singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nguyen, one of five newcomers on the Beacons roster.
The Chargers extended the lead to 4-1 at number six singles, as senior Brian Sou (Revere, Mass.) made his return for UMass Boston, but fell 6-0, 6-1 to Spassof.
Tascherau downed Cullen 6-3, 6-1 in number one singles, in a partial rematch of Friday afternoon's Round of 32 Doubles match in the ITA New England Regional Tournament.
Bizhoti cut the deficit to 5-2 for UMass Boston, when he earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at number four singles.
Colby-Sawyer College closed out the match with two more wins, as McCann defeated Lai 6-1, 6-4 at number three singles, and Utell downed Hernandez 6-2, 6-4 at second flight singles
The Chargers travel to Regis College on October 12, while the Beacons will play at the Eastern Nazarene Invitational next Saturday.
