Men's Tennis Earns Perfect Season and Sets Program Record For Wins With 9-0 Sweep of Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass.—UMass Boston Men's Tennis put an exclamation point on their outstanding regular season with their program-record 12th win of the season as they swept Bridgewater State University 9-0 Saturday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

Having already wrapped up a share of the regular-season title, UMass Boston completed their first perfect regular season in the Little East with an easy win, to move to 12-3, 6-0 on the year. With the loss, Bridgewater State dropped to 9-5, 3-3 in the Little East and will be the fourth seed in the Little East Conference Tournament which begins Tuesday.

The 12th victory of the year, and 10th straight, pushed the 2013 squad past the 1988 and 1990 UMass Boston teams that each finished 11-1.

Eglis Bizhoti (Dorchester, Mass.) led the Beacons to their 10th consecutive victory with a huge win at number six singles to hand junior Eric Johnson (12-1) his first loss of the year. Bizhoti teamed up with Seth Shavers (Boston, Mass.) to earn a victory at number three doubles as well, as he picked up his 15th and 16th wins of the season.

UMass Boston's top doubles duo of Sean Cullen (Medway, Mass.) and David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) put UMB ahead 1-0 with a dominating 8-1 victory over Jessie Gotlib and Sean Bleau.

Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) pushed the lead to 2-0 with a huge 8-2 victory at second-flight doubles. The victory was the pair's 10th in a row as they finished the season as one of top doubles pairs to go a perfect 6-0 in Little East play.

Bizhoti and Shavers made it a perfect sweep for UMB in doubles action, as they earned an 8-6 victory.

The Beacons kept the momentum going into singles play, as Cullen swept through Wesley Esthimer 6-1, 6-1 at number one singles.

UMass Boston clinched the victory at number three singles, with Loyer downing Gotlib 6-2, 6-1 to extend his personal winning streak to 21 straight.

Lai made it 6-0 Beacons at number four singles-where he dominated Cody Farrell 6-1, 6-3.

Hernandez matched Bizhoti and Loyer's perfect conference seasons in singles play, with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Matt McLeod at number two singles.

That left number five and number six singles left on the court, as each match went the distance.

Bizhoti recovered from a first-set loss, to earn a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at number five singles, before Shavers wrapped the match up with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win.

UMass Boston will await the winner of #4 Bridgewater State University and #5 Salem State University in the Little East Conference Tournament Semifinals. The Bears and Vikings will play in Bridgewater on Tuesday at 3 p.m., with the winner coming to Boston for a Thursday matchup.
