Nichols Hands Men's Tennis 9-0 Defeat In Spring Opener

KISSIMMEE, Fla.—A six-month break proved too much for UMass Boston men's tennis (1-1) Monday evening, as they fell to Nichols College (5-3) by a 9-0 score at the Oak Street Park Community Center.

After playing one match in the fall, a 9-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College, the Beacons had to wait nearly six months for match number two and the long rest was evident. On the other side, Nichols College played their third game in two days, and moved to 2-1 on the spring season, including a 7-0 win over Division I Holy Cross.

The Beacons played the Bison much closer than the final score indicated, as UMB's second doubles pair, along with three singles players managed to force tiebreakers.

Nichols started off the match by winning all three doubles matchups, as top doubles pair Eduardo Irizarry and Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of the Week Brandon Roode downed David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) and Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) 8-3. The Bison tacked on an 8-4 win over Lyle Analetto (Belmont, Mass.) and Seth Shavers (Boston, Mass.) at number three doubles, before Eglis Bizhoti (Dorchester, Mass.) and Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, Mass) fell 9-8 (7-4) at number two doubles.

Bizhoti continued to prove a tough out, as he took Nichols' Paul Healy to the limit at number five singles, before falling 3-6, 6-3 (10-5). Jay Garcia (Madras, Ore.) had a strong showing in his Beacons debut, before eventually dropping his number six singles match 1-6, 6-4,(10-6). And in the final match of the night, Lai went back and forth with Irizarry, before falling 3-6, 6-3, (10-8).

The Beacons will look for their first win of the spring Tuesday morning, when they take on North Central College (Ill.) at 10:30 AM at Star Island Resort in Kissimmee.
