Men's Tennis Competes at ITA/New England Regional

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – At their first major tournament of the 2012-13 season a group of men's tennis players competed against some of the top competition not only in New England, but in all of Division III men's tennis today at the 2012 ITA/New England Regional hosted by Williams College.

Competing in the huge tournament for UMass Boston was Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.), David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) and Sean Cullen (Medway, Mass.).

The afternoon got off to a very busy start for the Beacons as Lai and Hernandez teamed-up for the doubles competition.  The duo, which was one of the best in the Little East Conference last season, faced-off against Wesleyan University's Michael King and Zachary Brint in the opening round.  The two teams battled back and forth in a marathon of a match, but unfortunately it was the Wesleyan pair that would earn the 9-7 victory.

From there Cullen stepped onto the court in singles play to face Kevin Wang of MIT.  Cullen would put-up a great fight, but it was Wang that earned the 6-3, 6-3 decision.  Also competing in the singles tournament was Hernandez.

Against James Drum of Wentworth Institute of Technology, the reigning Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, earned the program's first ITA tournament victory since 2008, as Hernandez notched a 6-1, 6-1 win over Drum.

With the victory, Hernandez became the first player since the 2007 season to advance to the round of 32 of the singles tournament.  There he met Middlebury College's Alex Johnston.  Johnston would defeat Hernandez by the finals of 6-0, 6-0 to close out the Beacons run in the tournament.

Men's Tennis will return to competition in March when they take part in the annual spring break trip.
