NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – After a standout freshman season, David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) was named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, as well as earning All-Conference Second Team honors at No. 1 doubles. Doubles partner Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) claimed First Team All-Conference honors at No. 3 singles and Second Team honors at No. 1 doubles.
Hernandez, closed out his first season with the Beacons with an overall singles record of 10-5, 4-2 against Little East Conference opponents. A two-time Rookie of the Week honoree and a one-time Player of the Week selection Hernandez played a major part in leading the Beacons to one of the biggest turnarounds in program history. After notching just one win in 2011, UMass Boston under the direction of head coach Eric Berg posted their first eight win season since 2006. They also earned the program's highest regular season ranking in the conference standings as they finished tied for third overall. Amongst his key wins was a 7-6, 1-6, 10-8 decision over the 2012 Little East Conference Player of the Year in Western Connecticut's Troy Pandolifi.
When paired with Lai the duo was solid all season long as the Beacons No. 1 doubles team. Overall the two recorded a 10-4 mark and finished Little East play with a 4-2 record.
Individually Lai ended 2012 with a perfect 6-0 record in Little East Conference play. On the year the sophomore from Boston finished with an 11-3 record overall with 10 of his 11 victories coming at the No. 3 singles spot. Amongst his key wins this season was a 6-2, 6-4 decision over All-Conference honoree Scott Gagne from Salem State University.
