Men's Tennis Falls to Southern Maine in Little East Tournament

GORHAM, Me. – With two wins in doubles play and three straight wins in singles action the fourth seeded Huskies of Southern Maine (11-5) defeated the fifth seeded Beacons (8-7) by the final of 5-1 Tuesday afternoon at Costello Courts in the quarterfinal round of the Little East Conference tournament.

The Huskies will now face top-seeded UMass Dartmouth in the semi-final round on Thursday at UMass Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m. The Beacons close out the 2012 season with an 8-7 record overall and the program's highest overall conference ranking, tied for third.

Recording the lone victory for UMass Boston was no. 2 doubles pair of Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Seth Shavers (Boston, Mass.).  The two edged out their conference opponents by the final of 8-6.

The Huskies would take a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins at no. 1 and no. 3.  They would then record wins at no. 1, 3, and 4 singles to earn the tournament victory.  Loyer nearly pulled out the singles victory at second flight, but the match was stopped at 6-4, 1-6, 3-2.

Even with the loss the Beacons future looks extremely bright.  David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) and Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) dominated play throughout the spring season, with Lai earning a 6-0 record in conference play, while Hernandez was named Little East Conference Rookie and Player of the Week.  Loyer also earned Player of the Week honors for his strong play throughout the year, while Lyle Analetto (Belmont, Mass.) earned key wins for the Beacons.

The Beacons will lose just one player to graduation in Himanshu Dubey (Lucknow, India).
