LEICESTER, Mass. – Led by a two-goal outing from sophomore Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, MA) men’s soccer (5-3) got back on the winning track as they defeated the Hawks of Becker College (1-7-2) by the final score of 2-0 Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.
From start to finish the Beacons dominated the non-conference match-up. In total, they managed 15 shots in the victory, while the defense limited Becker’s offense to a mere six opportunities.
Galouzis, who continues to lead the Beacons offense this season, now with seven goals on the year, ended the 0-0 draw in the 14th minute of the first half. Setting up the goal was Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam), who had a strong afternoon on the right side.
The one goal advantage would remain for a majority of the contest. It was not until the 85th minute was Galouzis was able to battle through the Hawks defense to lay in his second goal of the day off of a Dan Purchia (Winchester, MA) pass.
Between the goal posts, Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, MA) totaled three saves to earn his third complete shutout of 2011. Becker’s Tim McDonald recorded four stops, while one save went to the Hawks defense that managed to deflect what would have been a Beacon goal mid-way through the second half.
UMass took all seven corner kicks in the match, and saw an all-around solid performance from the middle and defensive third. Junior sweeper John DeStefano (Auburn, NH) fueled the Beacons defense effort, while Victor Hugo Costa (Malden, MA) controlled the pace of the game in the middle half of the field.
Men’s soccer returns to action on Saturday when they host the University of Southern Maine at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
