SALEM, Mass. - After 90 scoreless minutes and less than three minutes into the first overtime period, Salem State's Owen Quane converted a penalty kick opportunity to give the host Vikings (5-2) a 1-0 non-conference win over men's soccer (4-2) Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.
The penalty kick was called after Quane was fouled by a UMass Boston defender at 93:24 in front of the Beacons goal. For Quane his goal was the third of the year, and first game-winner.
Both teams had their chances throughout Wednesday's match, with the Beacons holding a 15-14 advantage in shots. On goal, the Beacons totaled eight shots, while holding Salem State to just three shots.
UMass also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities as well. In goal Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, MA) totaled two saves. For Salem State Scott Hall recorded eight saves to earn the victory.
Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, MA) led the Beacons offense with three shots on goal. Victor Rosario was credited with two shots on target, and Luis Saquich (Marlborough, MA), Kevin Jago (Quincy, MA), and Victor Hugo Costa (Malden, MA) each recorded one shot.
Men's soccer returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Rhode Island College for a Little East Conference match. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
