BOSTON, Mass. – Looking to keep their momentum alive, the University of Massachusetts Boston men’s soccer team pulled out a hard fought 4-0 shutout victory over Eastern Nazarene College (0-5) Tuesday afternoon in the Beacons 2011 home debut at the Clark Athletic Center Field.

Four different players found the back of the goal, and junior goalkeeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, MA) came-up with three saves to earn his second straight shutout of the year.  With Tuesday’s victory, the Beacons are currently sitting 3-0 for the first time since 2005, when they opened that season with four straight wins.

Tuesday’s match was a physical battle for both teams.  With UMass looking to add to their win streak, and Eastern Nazarene looking to end their skid, both teams came out strong.  However it was the Beacons offense that dominated the first 45 minutes totaling 11 shots, as compared to Eastern Nazarene’s one.

The first goal of the match came in the 37th minute from newcomer Alemao Menchaca (Chelsea, MA).  That goal was the first of his collegiate career, and gave the Beacons the momentum they needed going into the second half of play.

After the break, Eastern Nazarene took control of the opening minutes, getting off four of their eight second half shots.  Even with the increased pressure by the Lions, the Beacons defense held strong and neutralized any real chance at goal.

Once UMass was able to regain control of the momentum, the Beacons quickly found the back of the net, scoring their final three goals in a 13 minute window.

Netting the Beacons second goal of the afternoon was freshman Douglas Silviera (Revere, MA).  Silviera, who scored the game-winner in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Farmingdale State, received a beautiful pass from Eric Owens (Raymond, NH) in the Lions goal box.  Silviera managed to take a quick dribble forward and placed the ball to the far post.

Alexander Jimenez knocked home his first goal of the year off of a Luis Saquich (Marlborough, MA) corner kick to extend the Beacons lead to 3-0.  The final score of the afternoon came from Kelvin Martinez (East Boston, MA).  Setting up the goal was Danny Housley (Plympton, MA), who crossed the ball to an unmarked Martinez on the far side of the net.

On the day, UMass outshot their opponent 25-9, a held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks as well.  Lions’ goalkeepers Seagers Rodrigues and Jake Johnson combined for 12 saves in the contest respectively, with the loss going to Rodrigues.

Men’s soccer returns to their home field on Thursday when they host Fitchburg State University at 3:30 p.m.
