BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- Junior Mike McCarthy's (Norwell, MA) goal with 3:50 remaining in the second overtime period lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 4-3 non-league victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team Wednesday evening at rain-soaked Clean Harbors Stadium. With the win the Buccaneers improve to 7-10 on the year while the loss drops the Beacons to 5-11 overall.
McCarthy converted passes from senior Kevin McCord (Norwell, MA) and sophomore Derek Young (Falmouth, MA) on the deciding tally for the host Buccaneers, as his first collegiate marker from 20 yards out capped a wild second half that saw the squads play in a wind-swept downpour that left standing water on most of the field.
Goals by McCord and sophomore Tim McDonough (Framingham, MA) in the first 2:26 of action staked Massachusetts Maritime to an early 2-0 advantage that held up at the break, but the visiting Beacons began their comeback when sophomore midfielder Luis Saquich (Marlboro, MA) converted a feed from fellow sophomore midfielder Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam) just 1:59 after intermission to slice the deficit to 2-1. Sophomore Adam Vieira's (New Bedford, MA) first collegiate goal on a McCord pass in the 57th minute extended the Buccaneer lead back to 3-1, but UMass Boston evened matters when sophomore midfielder Victor Costa (Malden, MA) hydroplaned a shot in from 10 yards out in the 77th minute and set up sophomore defender Verly Jean (Somerville, MA) on a deflection with 6:45 remaining in regulation, setting up McCarthy's heroics in the second extra session.
McCord added a pair of helpers to go with his goal in finishing with a four-point night for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a goal and an assist from McDonough as well as a single helper from junior Ryan Fischer (Marshfield, MA). Freshman Brett Young (Falmouth, MA) picked up his fifth win of the season in goal for the Buccaneers with a nine-save effort, while sophomore Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, MA) made four stops in net in the setback for UMass Boston as the Beacons outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 17-10 margin for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime closes out its 2010 schedule on Friday evening by hosting Salem State in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference finale for both squads at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while UMass Boston hosts Rhode Island College in its Little East Conference regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Clark Athletic Center Field in Boston beginning at 1:00 p.m.
