MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO PLYMOUTH STATE, 5-1
Oct. 24, 2009
Boston, MA - Senior forward Semir Mehmedovic (Zvornik, Bosnia) recorded a hat-trick to lead the Plymouth State University men's soccer team past University of Massachusetts Boston, 5-1 this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center field on the UMass Boston campus. The win improves the Panther's record to 9-6-0 overall and 3-3-0 in LEC play. The loss drops the Beacons to 4-9-1 overall, 1-4-0 in the LEC.
Mehmedovic got things started early, tallying the game's first goal just 8:18 into the match. The forward bent a free kick around a four-man wall to find the back of the net and give PSU the quick 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers increased their advantage to 2-0 at the 14:34 mark when freshman forward Aly El Tambouly (Cairo, Egypt) took a pass from sophomore midfielder Alex Martins (Pawcatuck, CT) into the UMass Boston box and fired a shot toward the goal. The shot deflected off of a Beacon defender, eluding senior goalkeeper Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA) for El Tambouly's second goal of the year.
After a hard foul inside the 18-yard box, UMass Boston was able to cut the lead in half when freshman midfielder Victor Costa (Malden, MA) converted a penalty kick for his second goal on the season at 31:05 in the first half to make it a 2-1 game.
The Beacons looked poised to even the score until junior forward Eric Owens (Newton, NH) provided a huge lift of the Panther bench, scoring his second goal of the campaign with just 2:12 remaining in the half to give the PSU the two goal cushion. Owens was assisted by sophomore midfielder Dre Cabral (Tokyo, Japan) who directed a head ball pass right to his teammate's foot to set up the scoring opportunity at the top of the 18-yard box to make it 3-1.
Mehmedovic wrapped up the day's scoring notching his second and third goals of the match in a span of 5:23. His second tally came at the 63:24 mark when junior midfielder Stefan Welch (Tokyo, Japan) sent a through ball from the midfield right to Mehmedovic who was able to beat Persuitte inside the box with a low, hard strike to the right corner of the net making it a 4-1 Panther lead. The game's final goal was scored at 68:24 when Owens headed a Beacon goal kick to Mehmedovic in stride before he completed the hat-trick for his conference leading 14th score of the season to give Plymouth State the 5-1 margin which it would hold onto.
Freshman keeper Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden) made five saves in the match for the Panthers while Persuitte turned away eight shots for the Beacons, matching his season high for saves in a game. Plymouth State will next travel to Babson College tomorrow, Sunday, October 25 for a 1:00 PM contest, while the Beacons host Eastern Connecticut State University on Monday, October 26 at 3:00 PM for a Little East Conference showdown.
