BOSTON, MA - Junior midfielder Rafael Santos (East Boston, MA) scored off a short pass on an indirect kick less than three minutes in to lift Salem State University to a 2-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team today at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. With the win, Salem State improves its record to 2-2-2, while the Beacons dropped their fifth consecutive match to fall to 1-5.
The game-winning tally by Santos was set up by senior midfielder David Miller (Lancaster, PA) who took the indirect kick to the left of Beacons goalkeeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, MA) following a foul by UMass Boston. The goal was the third of the season for Santos.
Vikings senior midfielder Youssef Benkirane (East Boston, MA) added an insurance goal at 36:19 after eluding Dowd inside the Beacons' 18-yard box. The tally was the first of the season for Benkirane.
Sophomore forward Luis Saquich (Marlborough, MA) gave the Beacons their best scoring opportunity at the 51:18 mark when he ripped a shot from outside the Salem State penalty box, but Vikings senior goalkeeper Luis Marques (Fall River, MA) was there for the save to preserve his and the team's first shutout of the season.
Dowd and Marques each finished with six saves on the afternoon.
UMass Boston is back in action on Saturday, September 25 at home against UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference matchup at 1:00 p.m., while Salem State hosts MCLA the same day at 3:00 p.m.
