PERSUITTE LEADS MEN'S SOCCER TO 3-0 WIN OVER SOUTHERN MAINE IN LEC OPENER
Sept. 19, 2009
BOSTON, MA - Senior goalie Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA) stopped all five shots he faced to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout victory over visiting University of Southern Maine in the Little East Conference opener this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 2-2-1 overall, including 1-0-0 in LEC play, while the Huskies fall to 2-4-0 and 0-1-0.
The win was the first for UMass Boston over Southern Maine since a 3-1 home triumph on October 6, 2001.
The Beacons got on the board just 8:52 into the first half when freshman forward Luis Saquich (Marlborough, MA) crossed from the 18-yard marker to classmate Wesley Trevino (Boulder, CO), who flicked to sophomore midfielder Alvin Qiriazi (Roslindale, MA) for the finish in front of the net for his first collegiate goal.
The match remained scoreless for the next 65 minutes until Qiriazi sent a thru ball from the midfield to UMB sophomore forward Mike Zazzara (Dedham, MA), who beat the last Huskies' defender and flipped a shot just over the keeper for his team-leading fourth goal of the season at 73:30 of the second half. UMass Boston increased its lead to 3-0, less than four minutes later, when Zazzara sent a cross into the box that Trevino controlled, flicked off of himself and then found the back of the net for his first career tally at the 77:19 mark.
Persuitte recorded his second shutout in as many weeks and the fourth of his career for the Beacons, while junior keeper David Kreps (Agawam, MA) made seven saves in 87:52 of action for Southern Maine, before senior James Suriyodorn (Scarborough, ME) played the final 2:08 without seeing a shot on net for the visitors.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Wednesday, September 23 when it travels to Salem, MA to take on Salem State College at 6:00 p.m., while the Huskies host Thomas College on September 22 at 4:00 p.m.
