SOMERVILLE, Mass. – A two-goal showing from Jason Kayne pushed regionally-ranked Tufts University past men's soccer Wednesday afternoon as the Jumbos handed the Beacons an 8-0 non-conference loss at Kraft Field.
The victory marked the first of the 2014 season for the Jumbos. Tufts entered the contest ranked eighth in New England on the most recent NSCAA Regional Poll. For the Beacons the loss marked their second of the year as they fell to 1-2.
On the day, the Jumbos outshot the Beacons 20-3, with Pedro De Carvalho (Praia, Cape Verde) recording UMass' lone shot on goal. Keepers Estive Sosa (Chelsea, Mass.) and Spencer Saunders (Old Lyme, Conn.) combined for four stops respectively, with the loss going to Sosa.
Kayne started the scoring for the Jumbos in the 13th minute, which quickly sparked two more goals over a three minute window to make it 3-0 Tufts. A goal from Maxime Hoppenot in the 40th minute extended the Jumbos lead to four before the halftime break.
In the second half, Kayne netted the first goal for the Jumbos to extend their lead to five. From there three different players registered a tally to secure the non-conference win for their team.
Scott Greenwood earned his first win and shutout of the year after seeing 70 minutes of playing time. Bruce Johnson closed out the match for the Jumbos, in his first appearance of the new season.
The Beacons return to action next Tuesday when they face Gordon College at 8 p.m. in a non-conference match.
