Men's Soccer Cruises To 4-0 Win Over Cross-town Rival Emerson
BOSTON, Mass.—Edmilson Barros (Boston, Mass.) scored twice and Marcus Pizzetti (Malden, Mass.) added three points as UMass Boston men's soccer rolled to a 4-0 victory over Emerson College Wednesday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Field.
With the win, UMass Boston improves to 8-4-1 on the year, while the Lions fall back to .500 at 6-6.
Barros recorded his league-leading ninth and tenth goals of the season, while Pizzetti added a goal and an assist to reach the 20-point mark in UMB's 13 game of the season. Junior forward Lenir Lima (Mindelo, Cape Verde) added an assist for the Beacons who improved to 4-1-1 on their home field.
Sophomore keeper Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) made five stops over the first 73:04 to earn his sixth win of the season, and teamed up with Camilo Florez (Manziles, Colombia) for the Beacons' fourth shutout of the year.
Emerson goaltender Carter Bowers fell to 5-5 after allowing three goals on seven shots through 52 minutes of play. Jacob Sigler came in in relief for the final 38:24 and made one stop on two shots on goal.
The Beacons held a 19-12 advantage on shots and 9-5 edge in shots on goal, but the Lions managed to earn a 5-3 margin in corner kicks.
UMass Boston struck for the first goal of the game just over 20 minutes in, when Lima dribbled past a defenseman into the box and sent a toe pass to Pizzetti who hammered home a shot into the top of the net. The goal was Pizzetti's team-leading third game-winning goal of the year thus far.
Emerson responded with their best chance of the half 10 minutes later, when Adam Halliday flicked a header on net through traffic that Rosales managed to handle at 32:25.
The Beacons capitalized 64 seconds later, when Barros took advantage of an Emerson miscue. Matheus Reis (Somerville, Mass.) sent a long lob towards goal that Bowers managed to knock away, but it was sent right to Barros, who proceeded to slide the ball in past the goalie for a 2-0 UMB advantage.
UMass Boston pushed the lead to 3-0 less than four minutes into the second half, when Pizzetti and Barros connected on a perfect give-and-go. Barros left a pass for Pizzetti, who dribbled away from two defenders before sending a perfect through ball to Barros and the Beacons freshman slid it by the oncoming goalie for his second goal of the afternoon.
Five minutes later Sigler made a huge stop to keep the deficit at three for Emerson, as he charged out of his net to make a stop on Jerry Phanor (Boston, Mass.) who had a slight lead on two Lions defenders.
The Beacons tacked on their fourth and final goal at 73:49 thanks to a Lions own goal. With Rolando Barbosa (Fogo, Cape Verde) and Phanor putting pressure on the Lions back line, an Emerson player attempted to clear a ball over the end line, only to have it skip off the goaltender and into the back of the net.
Emerson College will return to action Saturday when they travel to the Coast Guard Academy at Noon. UMass Boston will take to the road as well Saturday with a Little East road tilt against Western Connecticut State University at 5 p.m.
