Men’s Soccer Knocks Off Salem State, 1-0

SALEM, Mass. – In a very close back and forth contest that could have gone either way, a Marcus Pizzetti (Malden, Mass.) goal with just over five minutes remaining the first half proved to the deciding tally as men's soccer notched their sixth win of the year, and third straight as they defeated the Vikings of Salem State University by the final of 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

With the victory the Beacons improve to 6-2 on the year, and continue the best start to a season since the 2003 campaign.  That year UMB went 6-1 to start the year under former head coach Myles Berry.  For the Vikings they fell to 0-4 on the season with Wednesday's loss.

Playing a major part in the Beacons victory was goalkeeper Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) who made five stops to earn his third shutout of the season.  Pizzetti's goal marked the fourth of the year for the junior and first game-winner.

In the opening minutes, Salem State applied a tremendous amount of pressure on the Beacons backline, but UMB managed to weather the storm early.  Pizzetti broke the scoreless draw in the 39th minute on an unassisted free kick goal that beat Salem's Nondas Kargakis.   Kargakis tallied three stops in the loss.

On the day the Vikings outshot UMB 17-11, but it was the Beacons who held an 8-7 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes of play.  The Vikings also led the contest in corner kicks totaling six more than UMB (9-3).

Also having a solid chance at goal, which could have put the game away for UMB was Edmilson Barros (Boston, Mass.).  This week's Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, Barros was stopped by Kargakis about five yards out late in the second half.

Salem State also had their fair share of chances including a pair of shots that just missed the mark in the 20th minute of the contest.

The Beacons return to action on Saturday when they host the University of Southern Maine at 1 p.m. in the Little East Conference opener for both squads.
