Men's and Women's Soccer Earn Bids to ECAC New England Tournaments

BOSTON, Mass. - For the first time in the history of University of Massachusetts Boston soccer both the men's and women's soccer programs will be competing in a postseason tournament in the same year.  Both teams not only earned a bid to the ECAC New England Region tournament, but they were also selected as the fourth-seed.  Women's Soccer will host #5 Endicott College on Wednesday at 2 p.m., while men's soccer will travel to #5 Norwich University for a 1 p.m. match, which will also be played on Wednesday.

On the men's soccer side, the meeting between the Beacons (11-5-0) and the Cadets of Norwich University (11-9-0) will only be the second-ever in the history of the two clubs.  The last time the two met was in 2001 as part of the Albertus Magnus Fall Classic in New Haven, Connecticut.  Norwich defeated UMass by the final score of 4-0 on the second day of that tournament.

The tournament appearance will be the first of any kind for the Beacons since 2006.  This season, the Beacons produced their first 11 win record since their '06 campaign.  Led by sophomore Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, Mass.), men's soccer has scored a combined 43 goals this season, while only surrendering 15.  Junior goalkeeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, Mass.) has posted a single-season best seven shutouts, which includes two over Little East Conference opponents Western Connecticut State University (4-0) and the University of Southern Maine (3-0).  Galouzis has had another strong year for the Beacons, as he currently leads the team in all offensive categories.  On the year he has found the back of the net 12 times, while also dishing out seven assists for a combined 31 points (1st in the LEC).

For the women's team, this will mark their third straight ECAC tournament appearance, and second time that they have faced Endicott College (12-7-0).  Last season, the two teams met in the semi-final round, with Endicott earning a 3-0 victory.

UMass (13-6-2) will look to bounce-back from their tough penalty-kick loss to Keene State College in the Little East Conference tournament semi-finals.  The Owls, who were defeated by Eastern Connecticut State University also in penalty kicks, earned the number two-seed in this year's ECAC tournament.

Playing a major part in the Beacons 13-win season has been freshman standout Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.).  A possible LEC Rookie of the Year honoree, Ledin has been sensational for UMass with her conference leading 20 goals -- tied the single-season program record -- and 44 points.  Alongside her is senior Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, Mass.), who along with her five other classmates will look to end their careers at UMass hoisting the program's first-ever postseason tournament championship.

Just like their male counterparts, the women's side will feature a standout goalkeeper in freshman Dani Perkins (Murrieta, Calif.). In her rookie season, Perkins has allowed a mere 14 goals against, and currently holds the single-season and all-time career shutout record with 10.  Her 0.67 goals against average leads the Little East Conference going into this year's tournament.

If both teams are successful on Wednesday then they will advanced to the semi-final round which will be played on Saturday.  The highest remaining seed left in each tournament, following the quarterfinal round will host both the semi-finals and the championship, which is scheduled to be played on Sunday.
