Trio Leads Men's Soccer to 3-1 Win over Mass. Maritime

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Led by the offensive trio of Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, Mass.), Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam), and Victor Hugo Costa (Malden, Mass.) men's soccer (10-5) recorded their 10th win of the year for the first time since 2006 as they defeated the Massachusetts Maritime Academy (2-11-1) by the final score of 3-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Field.

All three players found the back of the net in the non-conference victory.  Johnson also added two assists, while Galouzis and Costa each managed one assist each.

Wednesday's match-up was quite the shootout as both teams got off 17 shots.  In the first half, UMass dominated their offensive third outshooting the Buccaneers 10-6.  In the second half, it was Mass. Maritime who did a majority of the shooting as they held an 11-7 advantage over the Beacons.

From the first whistle both teams played all 90 minutes with an extremely high level of intensity.  Neither team really controlled the flow of the match, as both squads looked to play the ball both over the top and through the middle-third in hopes of creating opportunities.

The Beacons broke the scoreless draw in the 16th minute on an unassisted goal from Johnson.  The junior midfielder headed home his own rebound, which hit off the crossbar on his first attempt.  After the first goal, it would take UMass nearly 25 minutes before recording their second score of the day.  Making it 2-0 game was Costa on a rocket one-timer that found its way to the far post.

Setting up the goal was Johnson, who crossed the ball to the far post, where it found Galouzis waiting.  Instead of trying to go to the near post, Galouzis played a perfect ball to Costa right outside the goal box.  The junior then timed it perfectly as he ran in and buried the ball to the far post to make it a two goal game with less than five minutes left in the half

After the break the Beacons as a whole began to relax, which gave the Buccaneers the window they needed to eventually end the shutout.  In the 70th minute, Mike McCarthy was able to break through UMass' defense to make it 2-1 in favor of the home team.

However any momentum gained from the goal, was quickly lost as Galouzis blasted a one-time of his own to the far post to secure the 3-1 victory.  This time it was both Johnson and Costa, who assisted on the play as Costa flicked the ball to Johnson, who then flicked it to Galouzis' right foot.

For the Beacons, goalkeeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, Mass.) combined for five saves to earn a career-first 10 wins.  Brett Young got the start for the Buccaneers and totaled two saves in 79 minutes of action.  Also picking up a save was a Buccaneer defender, who cleared a shot on goal from Kelvin Martinez (East Boston, Mass.).  Mass. Maritime also led the contest in corner kicks totaling seven, while UMass posted five.

Men's Soccer returns to action on Saturday when they host Plymouth State University at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
