Lacrosse Earns 11-8 Conference Win at Salem State

SALEM, Mass. - John Powers (Marshfield, Mass.) picked up four points on three goals and one assist as lacrosse defeated the Vikings of Salem State University by the final of 11-8 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field in a Little East Conference match-up.

Saturday's win improved the Beacons overall record to 6-4 and 1-0 in the conference win while the Vikings fell to 2-6 and 0-1 in conference.

Powers scored the game's first goal on a pass from Nick Tangherlini (Cohasset, Mass.) that put UMass atop 1-0 with 10:48 remaining. Noah Ellis (Hingham, Mass.) scored twice before the end of the period on assists from Nick Weiss (Westfield, Mass.) and Powers that gave the Beacons a 3-0 lead going into the second period.

Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.) added to the Beacons lead 15 seconds into the second. Weiss contributed with another unassisted goal to make it 5-0 UMass.

However, the Vikings went on a 7-0 run in the second period, to put the Vikings in control of what was quickly becoming a wild affair.  During Salem State's run, Andy Rice scored twice while Ben Melaugh added two assists and a goal.

Putting an end to the Vikings run was, Dom Fichera (Scituate, Mass.) who set up Tommy Petitti (Quincy, Mass.) for a goal that would cut the deficit to just one before the half as UMass exited the half down 7-6.

Nate Staples was led the Vikings on the face-off as he finished the game 14-for-19 and really was a factor in Salem States' offensive breakout.

Late in the third period Delpha tied the game at 7-7 with a beautiful finish that came from Ryan McGoff (Charlestown, Mass.) with just 41 seconds left.

Dino Flori (Watertown, Mass.) regained the lead for the Beacons with a snipe on a pass from Fichera with 11:13 remaining.  Less than a minute later, Powers added to the lead with another unassisted goal.

Salem State cut the deficit to just one with under eight minutes to play. Powers and McGoff capped off the victory with a goal a-piece to give the Beacons their first conference opening win since the 2007 season when they defeated UMass Dartmouth in the conference opener.

Craig Frehill (Norwell, Mass.) made 15 saves to earn the huge conference win for the Beacons, and held the Vikings scoreless in both the first and third quarters.  Dylan Svenson stopped 13 shots in the loss.  Melaugh finished with four points on three assists and one goal for the Vikings.

Lacrosse returns to action next Saturday when they host Eastern Connecticut State University at 1:00 p.m. at Clark Athletic Center Field.
