Lacrosse Drops Non-Conference Game at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Led by Chris Cook's and Jake Slonaker's four goals and one assist each MIT handed lacrosse their sixth straight loss as they defeated the Beacons by the final of 17-6 Tuesday afternoon at Roberts Field.

For the Beacons sophomore Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.) led the UMass Boston attack with three goals, while Pete McNichols (Norwalk, Conn.) fired home two goals.  Patrick McGoff (Charlestown, Mass.) was the team leader with four groundballs, while four other Beacons collected three respectively.

With the loss UMB falls to 2-8 on the year, while MIT improved to 2-5 overall.

Proving to be the deciding factor in the match was a 5-0 first quarter in favor of the Engineers.  UMB did manage a pair in the second, but with three more from MIT the Beacons went into the halftime break trailing by six.

In the third MIT would fire home five more goals, before adding four in the final frame.  The Beacons attack responded with three goals in the third and one in the fourth, but were never able to build any momentum.

Between the pipes Parker Barrell (Belmont, Mass.) recorded six saves, while Craig Frehill (Norwell, Mass.) finished with eight as the two goalies each played 30 minutes.

MIT led the contest in both shots (48-35) and groundballs (42-30).  They also won 17 of the 27 face-offs taken.  UMass did lead the contest in clear attempts as they successfully brought the ball into the MIT zone a combined 19 times, while the Beacons defense held the Engineers to just 17 successful clears.

Also finding the back of the cage was Thomas Petitti (Quincy, Mass.) at the 11:30 mark of the third quarter.

Lacrosse returns to action this weekend when they travel to Western Connecticut State University for a 1 p.m. Little East Conference game.
