NORTON, Mass. – Led by Duncan Smith's four goals and one assist the host Lyons of Wheaton College (Mass.) defeated men's lacrosse by the final score of 11-2 Wednesday afternoon Mirrione Stadium.
Along with Smith, David Schroeder also contributed to Wheaton's victory as he scored a combined three goals.
Netting one goal each for the Beacons was Domenic Fichera (Scituate, Mass.) and Cam Hanlon (Hanson, Mass.). Ryan FitzGerald tallied the lone assist for UMass Boston. Between the pipes senior netminder Anthony Fitti (Havertown, Pa.) had one of his busiest days of the season to date as he totaled a season-high 15 saves.
Fitti's standout play helped to limit the Lyons to just two goals in the first half. Unfortunately the Beacons were held scoreless through the first two frames. After the break Wheaton tacked on five goals in the third to take control of what was an even stalemate for the first half of the afternoon.
Fichera ended the Beacons scoring drought late in the third on an unassisted play. The goal marked the sixth of the year for him. The fourth period would see four more goals from the Lyons attack, while Hanlon drove home his third score of the year just minutes into the period.
Combined the Lyons outshot the Beacons 40-21, and also held a 35-19 advantage in groundballs. Eric Collins (Somerville, Mass.), Leo Ajemian (Walpole, Mass.), and Fitti each finished with a team-best three groundballs, while Wheaton's Harrison Bramhall led his squad with five pick-ups.
Lacrosse returns to action on Saturday when they face Plymouth State University at 1 p.m. on the Clark Athletic Center Field.
