MONTGOMERY, Alabama – The UMass Boston lacrosse team closed out their spring break trip with a convincing performance as they defeated first-time opponent Huntingdon College by the final score of 12-6 Wednesday afternoon at Samford Stadium.
Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.) and Domenic Fichera (Scituate, Mass.) led the Beacons to their first win of the 2012 campaign as they each drove home three goals a-piece. Both players also tallied an assist as well. Between the pipes senior goalie Anthony Fitti (Havertown, Pa.) was solid for all 30 minutes that he was in front of the cage as he combined for just three saves. Henry Bristol also contributed to the Beacons victory as he combined for eight saves in 30 minutes of action.
As a team the Beacons peppered Huntingdon all afternoon as they held a +19 advantage in the shots column (49-30). UMass Boston recorded 10 or more shots in all four periods and also posted two man-up goals.
Defensively the Beacons forced a combined four Huntingdon turnovers and also collected a combined 31 groundballs. In the face-off circle UMass 10-for-21 on the day.
UMass was no time getting on the scoreboard as they scored the game's first goal less than a minute in on a man-up play. They then put in two more goals to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Huntingdon finally got on the scoreboard with 1:44 left in the opening period.
Huntingdon then made it a one goal game in the second, but it was the Beacons who scored the next four goals to jump out to a 7-2 lead. Huntingdon managed just one more goal before the halftime intermission.
After the break both teams would score just one goal each in the third period. In the final frame UMass outscored Huntingdon 4-2 to secure the 12-6 victory.
Lacrosse returns to action next Wednesday when they travel to Curry College for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
