#11/14 Men's Hockey Settles For 4-4 Tie At Saint Michael's

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt.—Despite entering the third period with a 4-2 lead, #11/14 UMass Boston men's hockey (16-4-4, 9-4-4 ECAC East) couldn't hold on and had to settle for a 4-4 tie Friday night against host Saint Michael's College (6-16-2, 3-12-2) at Cairns Arena.

Freshman defenseman Tyler Bishop (Ramsay, N.J.) recorded a career-high two goals to give the Beacons a 4-2 lead heading into the third. Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) added a goal and an assist, while linemates Nathan Milam (Westland, Mich.) and Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) chipped in with two assists apiece.

UMass Boston netminder Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) stopped 28 of 32 shots to move to 4-2-2 on the year.

A.J. Pieprzak paced the way for the Purple Knights with two goals and an assist, to help St. Michael's College improve to 5-3-1 over their past nine games.

Junior goaltender Dave Donzati kept his team in the game all night long by stopping 45 of 49 shots. Donzati recorded 11 or more saves in every period, including 17 in the opening stanza, when UMass Boston outshot the Purple Knights 19-7.

The Beacons opened the scoring just 3:26 into the contest, when Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) registered his first collegiate goal.

Saint Michael's College responded with a pair of goals 10 minutes apart, as Nick Potter found the back of the net at 5:02 and Pieprzak gave the hosts their only lead of the night at 15:33 of the first.

UMass Boston scored the first of three straight goals just before the first period intermission, when Kuhn sent a laser past Donzati with a minute to play in the period. Sam Boyd (Lake Worth, Fla.) and Milam picked up assists on the play.

The Beacons dominated the second period of play, behind a pair of Bishop markers.

Bishop tallied his third collegiate goal at 7:01 of the second, when he sent a laser through traffic and into the net, off of passes from Buco and Kuhn.

He added his second tally on the power-play, when he rocketed a shot at 13:28, to give UMass Boston a 4-2 lead. Buco and Milam were credited with helpers on the power-play goal.

Saint Michael's College turned the momentum around in the third when Pieprzak cut the deficit to 4-3, 6:30 into the period. The junior forward took passes from William Cote and Kevin Altidor before firing home a power-play goal.

Eric Robinson found the equalizer less than three minutes later, when he potted an unassisted goal at 9:05, to tie the game at 4-4.

UMass Boston managed a few good looks over the final 10 minutes and the overtime session, but failed to beat Donzati a fifth time.

The Beacons earned a golden chance with 38 seconds left in overtime when the Purple Knights' Josh Dickman was called for a major penalty, but the Beacons recorded just one shot on goal, with Donzati robbing Bishop of his first collegiate hat trick.

UMass Boston will look to wrap up the third seed in the ECAC East Tournament when they travel to take on #8/9 Norwich University Saturday at 4 p.m.
