Reavis and Richter Propel #9/11 Men's Hockey To 7-4 Win Over UNE
BIDDEFORD, Maine—Tim Richter (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Max Reavis (Omaha, Neb.) each scored twice and #9/11 UMass Boston (17-4-2, 10-4-2 ECAC East) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back in a 7-4 win over the University of New England (6-15-1, 4-12-0 ECAC East) Monday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The pair of forwards combined for three assists as well, as UMass Boston earned their 10th conference win of the season.
Senior Mike DeGrazia (Novi, Mich.) added a goal and an assist for the Beacons, while freshman Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) tallied a goal apiece. Third-line center Derek Colucci (North Scituate, R.I.) recorded three helpers to tie his career-high for points.
After grabbing a 4-0 lead after two periods of play, UMass Boston put the game away early in the third, with three goals on three shots, over the first 4:47.
The University of New England struck back for four straight goals but it would hardly enough, as the Beacons moved to 3-0 this season against the Nor'Easters this year.
Freshman Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) picked up his 15th win in 20 starts, by making 29 saves on 33 shots.
Nor'Easters sophomore Colby Drost made 15 saves in the first 45 minutes, before being pulled in favor of Ian Edwards. Edwards stopped all seven shots he saw on the afternoon.
The Beacons took a 1-0 lead just 3:04 into the game, when Richter took passes from Rob Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Travis Daniel (North Brunswick, N.J.) and found the back of the net on the power-play.
Reavis added on to the lead just under five minutes later, when he forced a turnover at the blue line and sent a hard wrist just over Drost's shoulder on a 2-on-1 rush.
The freshman first-line center made it 3-0 13 minutes into the third, with help from Cam Harvey (Bow, N.H.) and Daniel. Reavis' 3-point night broke a three-game scoreless streak and tied his previous career high for points in a game.
UMass Boston capped off the second-period scoring at the 15:37 mark, when DeAugustine received passes from Colucci and Harvey and knocked it home for his eight goal of the year.
The first five minutes of the third period would prove to be the University of New England's downfall, as the Beacons first three shots found the back of the net.
Miller made it 5-0 UMB 1:33 into the third, with Colucci and Richter picking up assists on the play. Less than a minute later, DeGrazia scored the Beacons second power-play of the contest, with the dynamic duo of Reavis and Richter notching assists.
The Beacons capped off the scoring flurry with at 4:47, when Richter took passes from Tim Niedzielak (Chicago, Ill.) and Colucci and rammed it home to make it 7-0. The senior forward finished the game with a career-high four points and now has 25 points in 23 games this season, after combining for 11 points over the course of his first three seasons.
The University of New England finally found the back of the net at the 8:40 mark of the third period, and the Nor'Easters quickly added three more, in their final home game of the season.
UMass Boston will return home Friday night for their "Pink The Rink" Game against St. Michael's College at 7 p.m. With a win against the Purple Knights, UMass Boston will wrap up the second seed in the ECAC East Tournament, the Beacons can fall no further than the third seed in the eight-team tournament.
