MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO BALDWIN-WALLACE, 82-71, IN ECAC HOLIDAY FESTIVAL

BOSTON, MA - Freshman guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland, OH) scored a game-high 26 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field including 7-of-11 from downtown to lead Baldwin-Wallace University over the University of Massachusetts Boston men's basketball team, 82-71, in the closing round of the 2011 ECAC Holiday Festival tournament this afternoon at the Kissimmee Civic Center in Kissimmee, FL. With the decision, the Yellow Jackets improve their record to 6-7 while the Beacons fall to 6-5.
A jumper by freshman forward Dontreal Thomas (White Castle, LA) put UMass Boston ahead 6-5 with just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half before Baldwin-Wallace put the game out of reach with a 23-0 run over the next five minutes of action, fueled by 11 points from Fairhurt. UMass Boston senior forward Pat Joseph (Queens, NY) broke the scoreless drought with a layup at the 8:07 mark of the first stanza to make it a 20 point game at 28-8, Baldwin-Wallace. The Yellow Jackets would extend the lead to 24 points by halftime, outscoring the Beacons 41-17 in the opening frame.
UMass Boston was able to make things interesting by clawing its way back into the game in the second half. Over the first 13 minutes of play, the Beacons outscored the Yellow Jackets, 33-17, highlighted by a 10-0 UMB run midway through the half to cut the game to single digits at 55-47 with 7:34 to play. After extending the lead to as many as 13 (72-59), a pair of free throws by junior guard Michael Mitchell Jr. (Boston, MA) cut the Baldwin-Wallace lead back to eight at 79-71 with 25 seconds to play but it was the closest the Beacons would get as sophomore forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights, OH) connected on three free throws down the stretch to seal the 82-71 win for the Yellow Jackets.
Joseph led the Beacons in scoring for the second consecutive game, netted 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Mitchell Jr. finished the game not far behind with 17 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Also in double-figures for UMass Boston was junior guard Isaac Jenkins (Pordenone, Italy) with 13 points as well as sophomore guard Jason White (Roxbury, MA) with 10 points. Joseph and Mitchell Jr. were both named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts over the two games.
For Baldwin-Wallace, freshman forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick, OH) had a fine day from the floor, connecting on 6-of-7 shots including a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc for 19 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds.. Ameen chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds in the win. Payne was also named to the All-Tournament team while Fairhurst was named the Tournament MVP.
The Beacons are back in action Saturday, January 8 when they host Eastern CT State University in a Little East match-up at 3:00 p.m. while the Yellow Jackets host Capital University the same day at 4:00 p.m.
