Baseball Picked Fifth on Little East Preseason Poll

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Little East Conference baseball coaches have selected UMass Boston to finish fifth in 2013 according to this season's Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released Thursday afternoon.

The University of Southern Maine, who won the 2012 tournament crown, was picked as the favorite to repeat this season.  The Huskies received four first places votes and earned 58 total points.  Eastern Connecticut State University received two first place votes, while Keene State College earned one.  Both squads received a total of 53 points each.  Rhode Island College rounded out the top-four with a first place vote and 42 points.

The Beacons, who are looking to hoist their second conference title in the last three seasons, earned a total of 31 points.  Plymouth State University (21 pts.), Western Connecticut State University (18 pts.), and UMass Dartmouth (12 pts.) closed out the preseason poll in order.

For head coach Brendan Eygabroat, he welcomes back a veteran core of players.  This season will be another tough test for the Beacons as they are scheduled to face the 2012 national runner-up in Wheaton College, as well as taking on preseason nationally ranked squads in St. Joseph's College (Maine), Western New England University, Eastern Connecticut State, and Southern Maine.

Eygabroat welcomes back 2012 All-Conference selection Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) and New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) honoree in Jamill Moquette (Boston, Mass.).

Last season, Moquette burst onto the scene and led the Beacons with .377 average, .603 slugging percentage, 55 hits, 13 doubles, four triples, and four home runs.  He would finish second with 32 runs batted in behind Consiglio's team-best 35.  Consiglio, who was named Co-captain alongside senior pitch Michael Boughton (New Britain, Conn.), posted .364 average, 48 hits, nine doubles, and a pair of home runs.  On the base paths, Moquette used his tremendous to finish 28-for-31 on stolen base attempts, and finished with an impressive .486 on-base percentage.

Boughton returns for his senior as one of the Beacons go-to aces after posting a 3.64 ERA in 2012.  IN 10 appearances, Boughton earned the start in nine and closed out the year with a 2-4 record.  Through 59.1 innings of work, he struck out 22 and held opponents to a .277 average.

The Beacons will begin their 2013 season on March 14 when they face Greenville College (Ill.) at 4:30 p.m. in Auburndale, Florida at Lake Myrtle Field #3.  Their conference schedule is set to begin on March 30 when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a doubleheader set to begin at noon.
