NORTON, Mass. – Led by Corey Laliberte's seven shutout innings and Sean Ryan's 3-for-4, two RBI showing at the plate the Lyons of Wheaton College (33-7) defeated baseball (17-19-1) by the final of 5-0 Wednesday afternoon Sidell Stadium in the regular-season non-conference finale for the Beacons.
On the hill, Laliberte scattered six Beacons hits in his seven complete innings of work. He tallied just one strikeout and did not allow a walk. Ryan's afternoon capped off a nine hit day for the Lyons, which included four doubles.
Wheaton entered Wednesday's contest ranked ninth on the D3Baseball.com/NBCWA Top-25 Coaches Poll and sixth on the ABCA Coaches Poll. The Lyons are also ranked first in New England.
For the Beacons, freshman Kyle Szatrowski (Agawam, Mass.) fresh of his no-hitter from a week ago went five complete innings and totaled two strikeouts. Wheaton managed four runs on six hits while the lefty was on the hill. Jamill Moquette (Boston, Mass.) posted three of the Beacons eight hits, with Jack DeBiase (Prospect, Conn.) 2-for-4.
Wheaton got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from Eric Jensen. The Lyons then tacked on their second run in the fourth when Apolinar De la Cruz singled to left field, which scored Ryan who doubled to right field to start off the inning.
In the fifth, the Lyons offense tacked on two more runs, before scoring their fifth and final run in the seventh. Beacons did get a runner in scoring position in the ninth, but the Lyons would get the final out to secure the win.
Baseball returns to action on Friday when they travel to Rhode Island College for a Little East Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled at noon.
