BOSTON, Mass. – With the start of their 2012 campaign less than a week away the UMass Boston baseball team added another preseason accolade to their already growing resume as they were amongst the top-10 teams in New England according to the most recent issue of the New England Baseball Journal.
The Beacons who were tabbed to finish fourth this season in the Little East Conference were ranked 10th on the Division III Preseason poll. Along with the regional ranking senior outfielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, Conn.) was named one of the top players to watch for this season.
Guided by head coach Brendan Eygabroat the 2012 edition of the Beacons should be a solid mix of veteran experience and very talented newcomers. Just two years removed from their historic run in the Little East Conference and NCAA Division III New England Regional tournaments, the Beacons once again have their eyes set on climbing the mountain and making that trip back to Appleton, Wisconsin for the Division III College World Series.
Eygabroat who is now in his 8th season at UMass Boston, has transformed the Beacons into one of the most recognizable and talented teams in New England. This season, Eygabroat has loaded his bullpen with a slew of strong and capable pitchers that should carry the Beacons deep into the postseason.
With McCormack leading the way after a stellar junior season, the Beacons should have everything they need to make an immediate impact in both the conference and in the region.
As a junior McCormack finished the campaign with a .349 average, second best behind All-American Ryan Walsh '11. Named one of the top players to watch for in Division III by Collegiate Baseball the Newspaper, McCormack will once again be at the forefront of the Beacons line-up. Having started in all 40 games last season, McCormack recorded 59 hits and 41 runs scored in 169 trips to the plate. He led the Beacons with 14 doubles and finished fourth in RBI with 24. In the outfield he tallied a combined 101 putouts.
Baseball will begin the new season next Saturday in Florida when they take on FDU-Florham at noon.
