NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – After a week of standout performances the Little East Conference has named men’s tennis player David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia), high jumper Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.), and pitcher Kyle Szatrowski (Agawam, Mass.) Rookie of the Week for their respective sports. Szatrowski was also named the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week as well.
Hernandez earned a pair of victories this past weekend in the Beacons regular season finale against Bridgewater State University. The freshman from Bogota, Colombia cruised to a straight set-win (6-0, 6-0) at first singles, while also posting an 8-3 victory at first-flight doubles. The Beacons closed out their regular season on Saturday with one of the best regular season finishes in its history.
UMass Boston closed out the year in a three-way tie for third going into this week’s conference tournament. After the tie-breaker the Beacons earned the fifth seed and will travel to Southern Maine tomorrow for a 3 p.m. quarterfinal match with the Huskies.
Joseph, set a new program record on his way to a first place finish in the high jump at Saturday’s Little East Conference/New England Alliance Championship meet. With a height of 6-10.25, Joseph currently sits third in the nation and has qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship meet.
Szatrowski’s first two weekly honors came after he recorded UMass Boston’s first no-hitter in the 5-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday. In nine complete innings of work, the freshman lefty struck out seven batters, while only walking four. He went on to retire the final six batters in order to also earn his first collegiate win as well.
