One of the unsung heroes for any athletic department is its
athletic trainer. Brian FitzGerald served as the Head Athletic
Trainer for Boston State College at the close of the 1970s and,
following the merger with UMass Boston in the early 1980s, he
joined the Beacons' athletic training staff and soon became the
department's Head Trainer. While at Boston State and UMass Boston,
FitzGerald oversaw the care of many Hall of Fame athletes and
worked along side Hall of Fame coaches, such as Ed Barry, Charlie
Titus, Gordie Webb and Sherman Hart. A charter member and
Chairperson of Athletic Trainers of Massachusetts Legislative
Committee, he was named the ATOM Athletic Trainer of the Year in
1994. Fitzgerald left UMass Boston in 1996 to join the staff at
Children's Hospital in Boston under the direction of world renowned
physician, Lyle J. Micheli, M.D. and is the Athletic
Trainer/Research & Projects Coordinator for the hospital's
Orthopaedics Division of Sports Medicine. A member of the National
Athletic Trainer's Association for over 30 years, FitzGerald has
served as the organization's District I Chairperson for the NATA
Research and Education Foundation Board of Directors and received
the NATA 2005 Athletic Trainer Service Award. FitzGerald has been
highly visible in other organizations as well, serving as the
Executive Secretary on the Governor's Committee on Physical Fitness
and Sports, was the Chairperson for the Board of Allied Health
Professions for Massachusetts and served on the Board of Directors
for Sports Medicine Consultants, Inc. During his distinguished
career, FitzGerald has assisted with various events including, the
Women's World Soccer Cup, ISU World Figure Skating Championships,
US Figure Skating Championships, USA Track & Field National
Championships, BAA Boston Marathon, Bay State Games, Boston
Shootout, McDonald's High School All-American Basketball Game,
