Joseph Casey graduated from Boston State College in 1969 and finished his outstanding basketball career as the school's all-time leader in games played (105) and rebounds (1,799) and ripped down a school-record 17.4 boards per outing. He also holds the season-rebounding mark with 501 caroms during the 1966-67 season and pulled down a single-game school-record 34 rebounds in 1968. The center starred at BSC from 1965-69, scoring 1,256 points to rank third all-time and led his teams to a 71-35 mark for a .670 winning percentage over that span. He was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference All-Conference squad for the 1966-67 campaign and helped the Warriors to an appearance in the NAIA National Championship Tournament, while posting an 18-7 mark. As a freshman, Casey was a member of the school's 23-5 team, the best record in school history, and as a senior, he was selected as a co-captain for the 1968-69 Boston State team and earned the Scholar Athlete Award.
