Seven Tennis Players Earn ITA All-Academic Team Honors

TEMPE, Ariz.—Seven members of the UMass Boston women's and men's tennis teams have been named to the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Beacons placed five women and two men on the list. The women's team also earned ITA All-Academic honors, after having five of their eight members be recognized.

To garner ITA All-Academic Team honors a program must own a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or higher for the 2016-17 academic year.  For an athlete to attain ITA Scholar Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letter winner, have recorded a GPA of 3.50 or higher for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present institution for at least two semesters.

Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.), Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.) and Meghan Erickson (Hubbardston, Mass.) were all repeat winners for the women's team, with Garcia earning her third honors in three years. Senior Kelsey Shea (West Bridgwater, Mass.) added the second award of her career, while junior Maria Benatuil (Caracas, Venezuela) was a first-time honoree.

This marks the fourth-straight season under head coach Eric Berg that the women's tennis has been named an ITA All-Academic Team award recipient.

On the men's side, senior Nikhil Illa (Hyerabada, India) and junior Tin Tran (Quincy, Mass.) were both recognized for the first time.
